FAQs

What is a kasavu mundu?

Kasavu mundu is a traditional dress from Kerala made of fine cotton woven with a gold zari border. The gold border is characteristic of its depth, because it is woven into the fabric and not applied. It is the traditional ceremonial mundu worn during Onam, Vishu, weddings, and temple occasions.

Is Kerala mundu the same as dhoti?

They are similar garments, both unstitched lower body garments draped around the waist. However, they are not the same. The Kerala mundu is a reflection of the textile tradition of Kerala. It is generally white or cream in colour with a colored or golden border. Dhoti is a more generic term used all over India. It can be made in different fabrics, colors, patterns, and can be worn in distinct ways.

How to wear a mundu?

Take the mundu at the two ends, wrap it around your waist, and tuck the excess cloth at the front into the waistband. To drape a double mundu, hold the fabric wide open and fold it in two halves with the border at the bottom. Tightly wrap the fabric from right to left and then left to right. Gather the excess fabric at the side and fold into pleats. Tuck the upper edge in place.

What size Kerala mundu should you buy?

Most Kerala mundus are free-size. A standard 2-metre length is suitable for most men up to 5'10" with lean to moderate frames. The double mundu at 4 metres allows for the extra length of taller men or bulky men.

Can men wear a Kerala mundu to weddings?

A common wedding attire for Malayali men, as grooms and guests, is a Kasavu mundu made of premium cotton or silk blend with a gold border. It is one of the most elegant wedding looks in Indian ethnic menswear, paired with a white or cream kurta and traditional footwear.
